Cancellation of 2020 Maryland Science Olympiad State Tournament

It is with much regret that we announce the cancellation of the Maryland Science Olympiad State Tournament at Johns Hopkins University, scheduled for April 4, 2020.

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), Johns Hopkins University has made the decision to cancel in-person instruction and meetings on campus until mid-April. As a result, the university has informed us that we will not be able to host the tournament. Furthermore, earlier this evening  the 2020 National Science Olympiad tournament at NC State was also cancelled. In light of these factors and considering the health of our students and members of the MSO community, we will not be hosting a State Tournament this season.

The idea of hosting virtual tournaments has come up; however, Science Olympiad’s Commercial General Liability insurance does not permit virtual tournaments.

While we know there will be disappointment among students, coaches, supervisors and parents after all the hard work that has been put into their season, we need to put health and safety first. We encourage teams to prepare for next year; our state leaders will focus on planning events and generating excitement for the 2020-2021 season. Nationals has announced that they will replay the 2020 Rules for the 2021 season so students can retain and reuse their resources and devices.

We would like to end with a thank you to the many people who helped us accomplish our Regional tournaments in this past season. Literally hundreds of volunteers helped us run 4 Regionals for the first time in a season, a testament to the amazing people (students and volunteers alike) that make up the MSO community. Finally, we also would like to thank the Johns Hopkins Center for Educational Outreach who sponsors the Maryland State Tournament and enables much of what we do throughout the state. We will look forward to working with them again next year to bring amazing experiences to Maryland students.

As always, please let us know if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you all again in competition next season.
