To the teams able to travel to NJ and PA this past weekend, WAY TO GO!!!
You are literally going the extra mile to gain added experience that, combined with hard work, will lead to SUCCESS!
I like to say, “genius is what we see when passion and talent meet with opportunity. Of these three ingredients, passion is by far the rarest! The world is full of talented people who either lack passion or opportunity. The funny thing about passion is that it has a way of finding opportunity. This passion often defies reason – in fact, I’m quite sure some measure of insanity is involved.”Driving out of state is completely insane!
2010 will be an interesting competitive season. Looking forward to seeing you in February!!! Well done! -

Jun Huang, our MSO Physical Science Lab
Event Supervisor, has created a web site to help coaches and students better prepare for Physical Science Lab (Division B) and Physics Lab (Division C).
The site will keep you updated on what is going on for these events. Huang will also try to provide you with resources and study tools that he finds useful.

For high school students, the YES Research Report Competition closes February 1, 2010, and the rewards are outstanding.
Sixty students win $1,000 and travel to Washington DC with a teacher or parent to present their reports on public health issues. Then, the top 12 students win scholarships in amounts of $15K, $20K, $35K and $50K! Juniors and seniors prepping for MSO Disease Detectives are well on their way to knowing this subject matter frontwards and backwards, and could easily apply their knowledge to this challenge.

The snow on December 5th didn’t put a damper on our enthusiasm at the MSO Coaches Clinic. As the huge, wet flakes fell outside, MSO coaches and volunteer scientists and engineers met to discuss this season’s competitive events. Despite the weather, the attendance rate was 90 percent and a positive experience was achieved by all. Smiles were all around and comments like, “I was overwhelmed when I first saw all the different competitive events, but after today’s training I feel so much better.”
For those who were unable to attend the Coaches Clinic, please email your questions to me as they occur. If I can’t answer your question, we will connect you to a MSO scientist or engineer happy to work with you (and perhaps your team!)
A big, hearty THANK YOU to the coaches and students who attended the Coaches Clinic, including the presenters who made the training possible:
Coach Jason Johnson, Team Strategy
Coach Melissa Hartley, Examples of Previous Exams
John Appling, Randy Kleinert, and other members of the Baltimore Area Soaring Society,
Northrop Grumman Wright Stuff Workshop (with free kits!!!)
Joseph Paquette, Bechtel, Elevated Bridge Presentation
Ryan Michela, White House Communications Office, Mission Possible and Junkyard Challenge Presentations
Jun Huang, JHU Biomedical Engineering Department, Physics Lab and Physical Science Lab
Matt and Morgan Trexler and Ian Wing, JHU Applied Physic Laboratory, Egg-O-Naut Presentation
David Graham, US Army Signal Brigade, Fort Detrick, Battery Buggy Workshop
Shannon Colton, University of Milwaukee, and Krishnan Allampallam, QIAGEN,
Protein Modeling Workshop (Shannon flew in JUST for our clinic!!!)
The passion of these volunteers for their fields of science continues to amaze me. I believe passion is contagious, and all these volunteers certainly passed along both knowledge and passion in their workshops. THANK YOU and WELL DONE!

Director Maryland Scicence Olympiad
The Maryland Science Olympiad is making some presentations given at the Decemeber 5 Coaches Clinic available online.
At this time the Junkyard Challenge and Mission Possible are available for immediate viewing.
This year, as MSO focuses on developing the Baltimore City Region, we are delighted to have received a grant to provide registration fees and coach stipends to a few Middle School teams. Any middle school of any type may register as long as the school falls within the confines of Baltimore City. As numbers are limited, register as soon as possible. This stipend reflects MSO’s 2010 commitment to establish and develop the Baltimore City Region.
The coaching stipend is a “payment” for coaching similar to stipends provided to sports coaches and is subject to certain terms, including attendance by the team coach on December 5th. Sports coaches work several hours each week with well over 15 students depending upon the school size and the sport. Just so, MSO coach stipends are paid for COACHING. The conditions are listed below:
Team Grants and Coach Stipends are currently available for Baltimore City Middle Schools and include:
Team Grant: $180 Team Registration: Free
Team Grant: $9 Copy of the MSO New Coaches Guide to Success: Free
Coach Stipend: up to a $500 stipend paid to the Coach according to the following guidelines:
Coach Stipend will be paid at the Baltimore City Regional Tournament (April 10, 2010 at MSU)
at the Tournament Registration Desk
Coach Stipend amount is based upon the team size:
2 student team: coach is paid $200
3 student team: coach is paid $300
4 student team: coach is paid $400
5 – 15 student team: coach is paid $500
A Baltimore City Regional Director, Michael Jacobson, has been appointed to oversee the development of the region. For more information, please contact Michael Jacobson at BCSO@marylandscienceolympiad.org or register online now for the best chance of obtaining a stipend.

Qiagen is now a sponsor of The Maryland Science Olympiad for the 2008 - 2009 Tournament Season.
QIAGEN is the leading provider of sample and assay technologies. Sample technologies are used to isolate DNA, RNA and proteins from any biological sample. Assay technologies are then used to make specific target biomolecules, such as the DNA of a specific virus, visible for subsequent analysis.
Northrop Grumman provides lifetime sponsorship of the Maryland Science Olympiad Wright Stuff competition.
The Wright Stuff event is competed as part of the Science Application and Technology category. Each team deigns and builds a propeller propelled aerodynamic device. The objective of the event is to obtain the greatest time aloft.
Frederick County Public Schools has secured a grant to enhance Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in its middle schools. Each FCPS Middle School will receive funds dedicated for the advancement of extra-curricular activities that enrich student achievement in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (S.T.E.M.). In addition FCPS has instituted "co-curricular" time into its regular class schedule to allow teachers to work with students in activities like Science Olympiad during the school day. If you are a FCPS Middle School Teacher there hasn't been a better time to get involved with Science Olympiad!
